Prayer for Peace 평화를 구하는 기도

Almighty and merciful God, Father of all men, Creator and ruler of the universe,

Lord of all history, whose designs are without blemish, whose compassion for the errors of men is inexhaustible, in your will is our peace.

전능하시고 자비로우신 하느님, 모든 이의 아버지, 온 누리의 창조자이시며 지배자,

모든 역사의 주인이신 주님의 설계는 흠이 없나이다. 인간의 잘못에 대한 주님의 사랑은 한없으리니 당신 뜻 안에 우리의 평화 있나이다.

 

Mercifully hear this prayer which rises to you from the tumult and desperationof a world in which you are forgotten, in which your name is not invoked,your laws are derided and your presence is ignored. Because we do notknow you, we have no peace.

당신께 올리는 이 기도를 자비로이 들으소서. 세상은 당신을 잊어 혼란과 절망 속에 있나이다. 당신의 이름을 더 이상 부르지 않나이다. 당신의 법은 조소당하고, 당신의 현존은 무시되나이다. 우리가 당신을 알지 못하기 때문에 평화가 없나이다.

 

From the heart of an eternal silence, you have watched the rise of empiresand have seen the smoke of their downfall. You have witnessed the impiousfury of ten thousand fratricidal wars, in which great powers have torn wholecontinents to shreds in the name of peace and justice.

영원히 고요한 마음으로부터 당신은 제국의 흥망성쇠를 보았나이다. 당신은 수많은 골육상잔의 전쟁 속에서 불경한 격분을 목격하셨으며, 그 속에서 거대한 권력이 평화와 정의의 이름으로 전 대륙을 갈기갈기 찢어 놓았나이다.

 

A day of ominous decision has now dawned on this free nation. Save us thenfrom our obsessions! Open our eyes, dissipate our confusions, teach usto understand ourselves and our adversary. Let us never forget that sinsagainst the law of love are punishable by loss of faith, and thosewithout faith stop at no crime to achieve their ends!

불길한 결정의 날이 지금 동터오고 있습니다. 우리의 망상으로부터 우리를 구원하소서!

우리의 눈을 뜨게 하시고, 우리의 혼란을 소멸시키시고, 우리가 우리자신과 우리의 상대가 누구인지 깨닫게 하소서. 사랑의 법에 대항하는 죄로 신앙의 상실에 처해질 수 있으며, 신앙이 없는 이들이 그들의 목적을 달성하기 위해 어떤 범죄도 마다하지 않을 것임을 우리가 결코 잊지 않게 하소서!

 

Help us to be masters of the

weapons that threaten to master us.Help us to use our science for peace and plenty, not for war anddestruction. Save us from the compulsion to follow our adversariesin all that we most hate, confirm!ing them in their hatred andsuspicion of us. Resolve our inner contradictions, which nowgrow beyond belief and beyond bearing. They are at once a tormentand a blessing: for if you had not left us the light of conscience,we would not have to endure them. Teach us to wait and trust.

저희를 지배하려고 위협하는 무기를 저희가 지배할 수 있도록 도우소서.

전쟁과 파괴가 아니라 평화와 풍요를 위해서 저희의 과학을 사용하도록 도우소서.

저희들에 대한 적들의 혐오와 의심을 그들이 굳히도록 저희가 가장 싫어하는 방식으로 저희 적들을 따르려는 충동으로부터 저희를 구하소서.

저희의 신념과 인내를 넘어서는 내적 모순을 풀게 하소서.

그것들은 바로 고통이자 축복입니다: 왜냐하면 당신이 저희들에게 양심의 빛을 남겨두지 않으셨다면 저희는 그것들을 참을 필요가 없기 때문입니다.

저희들에게 기다림과 믿음을 가르쳐 주소서.

 

Grant light, grant strength and patience to all who work for peace.But grant us above all to see that our ways are not necessarilyyour ways, that we cannot fully penetrate the mystery of yourdesigns and that the very storm of power now raging on this earthreveals your hidden will and your inscrutable decision.

Grant us to see your face in the lightning of this cosmic storm,O God of holiness, merciful to men. Grant us to seek peace whereit is truly found. In your will, O God, is our peace.

평화를 위해서 일하는 모든 이에게 빛을 주소서, 용기와 인내를 주소서.

그러나 무엇보다 우리가 우리의 방식이 결코 당신의 방식이 아니며,

우리가 당신이 설계하신 신비를 완전히 파악할 수 없으며,

이 지상 위에 지금 미친 듯이 날뛰고 있는 엄청난 폭력이

당신의 숨은 의지와 당신의 측량할 수 없는 결정을 나타내고 있음을 깨닫게 하소서.

이 우주 폭풍의 번개 속에서 당신의 얼굴을 보게 하소서.

오 인간에게 거룩하고 자비로운 주님. 평화가 있어야 할 곳에서 저희가 평화를 구하게 하소서.
